What Is Ayurveda?

What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is a very old system of healing that has been practiced in India for over 5,000 years.  The teachings of Ayurveda comes from the ancient texts called Vedas. These Vedas are written in Sanskrit and are the language of higher consciousness.

This organized and planned system of healing is personalized to each individual according to what imbalance is determined to be present. Ayurveda, pronounced ah-yer-vey-duh, is a customized healing system that addresses the mind, body and spirit of each individual. Click here to hear the word pronounced.

Ayurveda starts with helping you find things that balance your:

  • Diet (Creating a customized dietary plan based on your unique balance of the elements)
  • Lifestyle (Developing a Dinacharya or Daily Routine that helps you find balance vs create problems)
  • Stress Management (What causes you stress is unique to you. So the approach to helping you manage stress is based on what CAUSES you stress.)
  • Support healing of any health issue (This includes health issues that are diagnosed or things you are seeking to balance. Ayurveda provides a personalized systematic approach balancing health issues.)

One of the main goals of Ayurveda is to help each person know themselves. What does that mean?  This system of healing helps you understand your natural tenancies (why you do the things you do) and how to best manage them to achieve optimum health. It also teaches us that the root of all disease is in our digestive system and in our mind. Ayurveda develops treatment plans that simultaneously address both of these areas.

I am a Certified Ayurveda Practitioner guiding clients to find balance in all areas of their life.  If you have longed to have a health practitioner actually listen to you, properly evaluate your challenges and develop a customized approach then guide you every step of the way, then an Ayurvedic approach is for you. First, we develop a customize dietary plan starting with where you are now so your body can have a gentle nudge in a new direction versus be jolted with an all new dietary plan.  I also suggest using herbal formulas (which are subtle forms of nutrition) that are custom designed for your specific needs. Second, we work with the lifestyle habits that may be causing imbalances in your life. I guide you through changes in your daily activity in such a way that start to balance your current health issues. Third, I continue to support you during our regular follow up visits. These follow up visits are very important since we evaluate how you are doing, what you are having trouble with and find creative solutions to help you succeed. This on-going personal approach is one of the reasons that Ayurveda is so successful. BUT, Ayurveda doesn’t treat symptomatically. That means that we don’t just find solutions to your one symptom. Ayurveda is a system of healing that “treats” the whole person and gets to the root of your imbalances. Our goal is to help you find your own place of balance and give you ways to nourish your mind, body and spirit.

Ayurveda works closely with the Elements. All living things have a unique balance of the elements present. The grouping of these elements are called doshas or “biological humors.” The Vata dosha is made up of Air and Ether (or consciousness) and governs all movement. The Pitta Dosha is Fire and Water and governs metabolism and the ability to transform things. The Kapha dosha is made of Earth and Water and provides the protective lining  in the body and the thing that holds it all together.

Through an in-depth consultation, your unique blend and balance of the doshas is determined. From this place, a comprehensive plan is created using your known imbalances, health goals and natural tendencies. This plan is often adjusted with the change of the seasons as well as any change in your health status.

In addition to private consultations, I offer in-person classes on the basics of Ayurveda healing – some of them are FREE. These classes give you simple ways to implement Ayurveda teachings and help you know what to expect from an Ayurveda program.
